Apparently so. Or at least that is what we see in the latest Louis Vuitton bag ad shot by Annie Liebovitz and featuring Gorbachev riding in a car outside the Berlin wall. Good thing to know that perestroika and all the effort to tear down the Wall was all for the sake that former, privileged world leaders can now buy overpriced, crappy bags with impunity.
But not without scrutiny.

What p#$&% me off the most about the ad -- despite that it is a gorgeous, atmospheric photo -- is the message that capitalism trumps all: communism and clearly democracy as well.
What occurs to me first is the sense of protectedness or separateness; Gorbachev is clearly not part of the concrete squalor and the larger reasons behind it. He's a spectator, snug in his expensive limo, being driven right through it all. With, of course, an LV bag that probably costs more than his chauffeur makes in a week.
